Multilobal fibers have traditionally been used to impart functionality such as better absorbancy or conductivity. Modification in the polymer feed and cross-sectional geometry enables better spinnability and imparts better physical properties. Trilobal fibers have been used in the carpet industry to add finishes for prevention of soiling or staining. In particular, this paper deals with using the modified tipped-trilobal filament cross-sec- tions to spin elastomeric polymers. This type of cross-section also enhances the fracturing of such filaments to produce microfiber webs that have considerably higher surface area, which are flexible and highly durable.
