Traditional lines design methods mainly rely on the performance of parent hulls and the long-term experience accumulated by the designers. At this stage, a new design method combining CAD parametric modeling technique and CFD numerical computation technique makes some breakthrough beyond the traditional methods. Taking a 5 000 TEU containership as an example, the initial attempt of this method is elaborated in detail. The successful design of the lines demonstrates that the design method based on parametric modeling is helpful in terms of improving the hull lines design capacity and efficiency, also alleviates the dependence of designers on the parent hulls and design experience.
