意图是人物行为(包括内外叙述者行为)发生的根源,故而从意图层次研究人物行为,从意图间的关系研究小说叙事的结构,较之从动作行为、故事情节的外在结构研究小说更深入一层,我们称之为内结构。内结构由人物意图元类式层次、叙述意图元层次、表意意图元层次三结构组成。由于第一层次是小说内结构的主体,又是其他两个层次意图的载体,故而成为本文阐述的中心。人物意图元类式分为单意图元与复合意图元。单意图元包含了一个主导意图,分为单意图元和单意图元组两类。复合意图元包括单意图元类式的交叉,以及多个人物和多个意图的结构组合。小说的接受效果来自主要人物意图力的表现层次,意图元的组合方式以及表意的情感度与精神品格,并依次影响动人、透人、移人的深广度。

Intention is the cause of action on the part of the characters,including that of the internal and external narrators.A character′s action and the narrative structure of a novel can be explained in terms of inten-tion and inter-intention relationship respectively.This kind of study reveals the deep structure of the novel, which is more fruitful than a simple analysis of the external structure of action and plot.The deep structure con-sists of three types of intention units,namely,character intention units,narration intention units,and signif-ying intention units.The paper takes the first type as the focus of its study since the character intention forms the main body of the novel′s deep structure and serves as the foundation for the other two types.The character intention can be divided into single intention units and complex intention units.The former has a dominant in-tention and can be further divided into two types,the single intention and single intention sequence.The latter include the intersection of single intention units and the assemblage of multiple intentions and multiple charac-ter intentions.The reception of the novel is largely determined by how powerfully the major characters′inten-tions function,how well the intention units are combined and how effectively the signifying intention units work out affective effects.
