The toughening technologies and mechanism of the thermoset epoxy resins were discussed and a new generation nano-toughener FORTEGRA 202 from Dow Chemical was studied in various hardener systems. Compared with carboxyl terminated butadieneacrylonitrile (CTBN) copolymer or the epoxy resin pre-reacted CTBN, FORTEGRA 202 epoxy toughener provided more space for formulation tuning due to its lower viscosity and the higher glass transition temperature (T ) for cured epoxy resins. Besides, it can provide better fracture toughness, higher adhesion and moreg transparent appearance due to its uniform nano size phase separation.
