The research status of chemical conversion coatings on magnesium alloys such as chromate conversion coating, phosphate conversion coating, manganate-permanganate conversion coating, stannate conversion coating, rare-earth and phytate conversion coating were reviewed. The disadvantages of these various conversion coatings processes were analyzed. And the developmental trends of chemical conversion coatings on magnesium alloys were proposed.
