马礼逊于1833发表的《论出版》一文曾由赖光临在1978年节译为《印刷自由论》，多被学者转引。同年在《中国丛报》还有一篇题为《论出版》的文章，未曾被人关注。这两篇英文的《论出版》，其写作背景、所表达的出版自由观念及其论述依据均有关联，可以说明马礼逊当时并不是为了向中国人输入出版自由的观念。

Morrison’s On Publishing, published in 1833, was translated partly as On Liberty to print by Lai Guanglin, but wasn’t based on the original text published in Canton Register. Chinese Repository also had an article entitled as On Publishing. This paper shows that the two English articles On Publishing have some relations in the writing background, the concept of freedom of expression and their discussing basis, which will be helpful to re-evaluate the value of Morrison article and its significance for the history China’s press and publication.
