黑格尔认为，具有相反两义且又同时合用的字词宜于思辨,我们将这种字词称之为“思辨词”。我国古代训诂学曾称之为“反训”，但难于自圆其说。在《管锥编》中，钱钟书先生从体用有别的观点出发，厘清了多义词的种类，并对一字包含正反多义并同时合用的字词的辩证意义，进行了深入的阐发，指出思辨词是客观事物和人们观念情感等矛盾统一扣矛盾转化的生动反映，表现了我们民族的高度智慧。

Qian Zhongshu has discussed the "usage of the polysemous word" in his work Guan Zhui Pi- an. He classifies its application into six group, the explanation of one meaning while abandoning the other when they are similar; the explanation of all the meanings when they are similar; the explanation of one meaning while abandoning the other when they are opposite; the explanation of all the meanings when they are opposite and the use of them in one place; the explanation of one meaning while abandoning the other when they are opposite and the use of them in one place; the juxtaposition of the explanation and the usage of the meanings both similar and opposite. Speculative words are synonyms which contain both similar and opposite meanings and which juxtapose the meanings in one place. A speculative word depicts the contra- dictorily changing unity of the thing it represents. It also reflects the contradictorily changing unity of peo- ple's feelings and ideas formed in the process of understanding the thing.
