This paper looks back the history of construction in Nantong at ancient times, it elaborated the thought of urban construction named“the first city in modern China”in Nantong, then by analysing the urban spatial ar angement or characteristics named one city and three towns, summarized its advantages and limitations, in order to provide reference and enlightenment for the construction of today's urban planning.
