皮肤是保护人体抵抗外来病原的首道防线，因此维护皮肤完整性是重要的医疗护理目标之一。尽管病人在医疗机构中接受密集的专业治疗护理，不预期的烧烫伤仍有可能发生。烧烫伤可导致病人病程延迟，甚至死亡，增加病人及医疗机构额外的医疗成本，若因为医疗护理过失造成皮肤受损，医院将承担相关责任或面临法律诉讼。预防烧烫伤是医务人员、病人及照顾者共同的责任。因此从制度方面要建立预防烫伤的护理指导标准，执行预防烫伤标准流程及护理指导，给予医务人员、病人及家属预防烧烫伤的观念，强化病人及照顾者认识烧烫伤倾向；及早评估病人发生烧烫伤的原因，制定预防烧烫伤的防范措施，可降低烧烫伤对病人的伤害与合并症。
