《世说新语》一书主要记载汉末至东晋的士族阶层人物的趣闻轶事，尤详于东晋。《晋书》记载了从司马懿开始到晋恭帝元熙二年为止近二百年的历史。房玄龄等人在修《晋书》的时候，部分条目在一定程度上参考了《世说新语》的内容。长期以来人们将《世说新语》视为小说，确切地讲《世说新语》其实是夹杂失真成分的历史笔记资料。
《세설신어》일서주요기재한말지동진적사족계층인물적취문질사，우상우동진。《진서》기재료종사마의개시도진공제원희이년위지근이백년적역사。방현령등인재수《진서》적시후，부분조목재일정정도상삼고료《세설신어》적내용。장기이래인문장《세설신어》시위소설，학절지강《세설신어》기실시협잡실진성분적역사필기자료。
The anecdotes of“Shi”class are the main contents of Shishuoxinyu, especially in the Eastern Jin Dynasty. The book has thirty-six chapters, such as virtue, language, government affairs, literature etc. Normally, the academia believes the book was written by scholars who were organized by Liu Yiqing. The Jinshu was edited by Fang Xuanling, Chu Suiliang etc. It contains one hundred volumes. The recordation is about two hundreds years from Si Mayi to Jin Gongdi, also including the history of Sixteen Countries Dynasty. Before the book was finished, some contents of Shishuosinyu were quoted by the author. For a long time, scholars considered Shi shuoxinyu as a kind of novel. In fact, the Shi shuoxinyu more resembles a historical book mingled with fake items.
