淠河是六安市境最重要的一条河流，是皖西人民的母亲河。淠河沿岸盛产绿茶、大麻。多部六安州、县志都写到：本州商旅贩运之货，有粟米、竹木与茶等，以荼最为著名。史籍中则唐代已有记载。古代水运发达，淠河沿岸的茶叶和大麻主要通过淠河古水道输往外部世界。像古代淠河这样通过流动的商船和静止的津渡码头，把区域特产的茶和麻传送到各地的水道，可能是国内唯一。淠河茶麻古道在很大程度上催生了淠河流域茶文化。
비하시륙안시경최중요적일조하류，시환서인민적모친하。비하연안성산록다、대마。다부륙안주、현지도사도：본주상려판운지화，유속미、죽목여다등，이도최위저명。사적중칙당대이유기재。고대수운발체，비하연안적다협화대마주요통과비하고수도수왕외부세계。상고대비하저양통과류동적상선화정지적진도마두，파구역특산적다화마전송도각지적수도，가능시국내유일。비하다마고도재흔대정도상최생료비하류역다문화。
Pi River is the most important river in Lu'an and it is the mother river of local people. It is wealthy in green tea and hemp along this riverside. In some Lu'an county annals, the travelling merchants from this district transported millet, bamboo, wood, tea etc. for sale, among which the tea is the especially most famous good from in this area. This also had been recorded in historical book since Tang dynasty. In the early times, water transport was so convenient that tea and hemp can be exported along the ancient watercourse of Pi River. Accordingly, this could he the unique way to transmit regional specialties such as tea and hemp through waterway composing of moving boats and static dock. To a great extent, "tea-hemp route" of Pi River promoted tea culture along the riverside.
