Interpretation of the novel Grief over the Deceased from different perspectives indicates that there ex- isted deep estrangement between Juan Sheng and Zhi Jun. The tragedy of the love story was mainly caused by the weakness rooting in the national character that obstacle the communication between people. The theme of Grief over the Deceased may be interpreted as the disclosure of the indifference and estrangement of the national character.
