作为一个重要的教学手段,语法翻译法在外语教学中发挥了不可否认的积极作用。它的运用不仅由主观因素——教师的积极的态度所决定,也由客观因素——学校教科书大纲和考试大纲要求来决定。有人认为,语法翻译法必须满足教学和学习的过程,只有在这样的情况下,我们才可以正确地处理语义、词汇、句法和修辞的问题,并最终用这种方法提高语言学习者的能力。

The use of translation as a workable teaching device in FLT is made feasible not only by the subjective factor—the teacher's positive attitude toward it—but also by the objective factors such as the translation requirement made in our textbook and by examination regulation as well as the undeniable active role that translation plays in FLT.With the present employment of the communicative approach in ELT,instructor has to re-view the use of translation within the communicative framework and establish for translation within this framework an appropriate methodological place which can be described as of the secondary type.It is argued in the paper that the theoretical base for such a place is the precondition of the attainment of communicative competence that translation must satisfy in the teaching and learning process and only under such a condition can language instructors judiciously use translation as an instruction device in many ways such as handling semantic,lexical,syntactic and rhetorical problems,and it is believed that this will ultimately improve the learner's L2 competence".
