《一个女人》描写了有着民主自由意识与个性解放觉醒的主人公叶子，为了追求个性自由和解放经历了种种阻碍，最终在封建专制政治与封建传统思想文化的压迫之下惨遭失败。其悲剧既有社会责任，又有个人责任。在作者所设定的时代背景和社会环境中的叶子这一人物形象无疑具有典型意义，可以说她就是经过明治维新洗礼的“新”女性的缩影。
