在近代安徽的民主革命运动中,蔡晓舟作出了较为突出的贡献。他参加了五四运动,并与杨亮功合编了记录五四运动的第一本史料集——《五四》,与北大的著名学人也进行了学术交流;他是安徽新文化运动时期的组织领导者,积极组织和促成暑期讲演会的举办,创办并主编了多种报纸、期刊以宣传新思想,为筹建安徽大学,甚至不惜刀断左手中指;他是安徽早期的革命者之一,曾组建安徽各界联合会,筹办安徽社会主义青年团;他发动了安徽历史上著名的吴山庙起义。他的诸多革命活动,为近代安徽社会的进步和发展作出了重要贡献。
