《太平广记》符命小说基本上是唐五代时期的文学作品，是探讨唐五代天命观念的重要文献资料。由于命数天定的导向，符命小说不仅有特定的文学主题，折射人们普遍关注的焦点所在，而且有相对固定的书写程式，展示出独特的叙事特征。符命小说宣扬命数天定观念，属于民间世俗文化的小传统，虽然与儒家文化大传统有一定差异，甚至悖离，却是精英文化不可或缺的有益补充和必要存在。

The stories of people's fate in T'ai-p'ing Kuang-chi are the Tang and the Five Dynasties literary works, which are important documents of people's fate. These stories have specific literary theme which focuses what people like. And these stories have relatively fixed writing program which shows the unique narrative characteristics. These stories think the people's fate is decided by God, which is the culture of the little tradition. So there are some differences with the traditional Confucian culture, but it is a beneficial supplement and necessary for the elite culture.
