元狩二年（公元前121年），河西归汉后，汉王朝通过移民、屯田等措施，使河西走上了发展农业的道路，并逐步打破了原有畜牧业一枝独秀的局面。敦煌汉简所记录的敦煌农业初步发展的概况，是河西地区农业发展的一个缩影，也是多种因素共同作用的结果。由于敦煌地处河西最西端，是中原和西域两大文明区的交汇处，其农业的初步发展颇具特殊意义。
원수이년（공원전121년），하서귀한후，한왕조통과이민、둔전등조시，사하서주상료발전농업적도로，병축보타파료원유축목업일지독수적국면。돈황한간소기록적돈황농업초보발전적개황，시하서지구농업발전적일개축영，야시다충인소공동작용적결과。유우돈황지처하서최서단，시중원화서역량대문명구적교회처，기농업적초보발전파구특수의의。
In the second year of Yuanshou(121 B. C), after Hexi being included in the Han ter- ritory, the Han dynasty guided Hexi on its way to developing agriculture through measures such as immigration and garrisoned farming, thus gradually changing the situation of hus- bandry being the only industry in this area. Dunhuang Bamboo slips have recorded its prelimi- nary agricultural development, and it is a miniature of the Hexi agricultural development and the result of many factors. Due to its unique location, being the westernmost of Hexi and the intersection of Hexi and Xiyu, the preliminary agricultural development of Dunhuang is of spe- cial significance to Han dynasty.
