作为有独立社会地位的士阶层在楚国形成于楚庄王至楚惠王时期。这一时期楚国的土地制度朝向私有化方向发展，县制和封君制的推行，私学兴起，为新兴士阶层的形成创造了条件。士阶层的形成对楚国历史文化的发展产生深远影响：他们关心国家命运，积极参与政治，促使楚国吏治清明；开创了独具特色的学术流派---道家学说；明辨时务，变法图强。

As a stratum in ancient Chu state , Scholars came into stage in the period between the ruling of King Zhuang of Chu and the ruling of King Hui of Chu .In this period , Chu's land system was becoming privatized .Besides , Chu's emperor built up county system and sovereign title-granting system , and there was a trend of setting up private schools .All these provide conditions for the formation of the emerging scholar stratum .The formation of scholar stratum profoundly affected the history and culture of Chu kingdom:they care a-bout the destiny of the state and proactively take part in the political issues , making the Chu kingdom a developed bureaucratical socie-ty;a unique school of thoughts-Taoism was created; Chu's politician was urged to clearly discriminate the situation of the times and search for reform .
