斯图亚特?霍尔，英国新左派创始人之一、伯明翰学派文化研究之父，积极地穿梭在英国社会运动、公众讨论和学术研究之间，有效地开启了学术工作政治化的先河，不但留下了“电视话语中的编码/解码”、“多元文化主义”、“接合理论”等诸多已然产生深远影响的理论遗产，同样甚至更为重要的是，于其间展示了旨在保持理论思考与现实介入良性互动的作为一种方法的“不作保证的马克思主义”：反对决定论和还原论，强调理论开放性，主张不断理论化。这一方法无疑将在推进霍尔研究的同时，为我们提供一种对待理论，尤其是舶来理论的别样视“，促成我们形塑凸显中国本土性的文化研究范式。

Stuart Hall is one of the founders of the British New Left and father of Birmingham School of Cultural Studies. With his effective incorporation of the British social movements, public debates and academic researches, Hall successfully initiated the project of politicizing the academic work, leaving behind lots of significant theoretical legacies such as “encoding and decoding in the television discourse”, multiculturalism, the theory of articulation, etc. It is equally important that Hall stressed on the openness of continuation of theories, against determinism and reductionism. But as far as Chinese cultural studies is concerned, what matters more is perhaps Hall's advocating and practicing a method represented by his “The problem of ideology: Marxism without guarantees”, which would on the one hand further our understanding of Hall, and on the other hand, offer us an alternative perspective towards any given theory, and stimulate us to formulate a cultural studies paradigm featuring Chineseness.
