培养创新性人才是当前石油工业发展的需要，也是提高学校办学质量的需要。创新性人才培养模式采用以确定理论教学为“平台+模块”、实践教学为“基本+创新”的全新模式。其途径是从创新教学体系，优化教学内容；加强实践教学改革，强化学生专业能力；加强教材建设，推行精品课程；完善后勤保障，提供建设资源三个方面进行。
