《史记·货殖列传》蕴含了非常丰富的经济思想，比如交易的福利、市场自由主义与政府的作用。司马迁认为，交易在财货增长中具有决定性的作用。这一点足以和现代经济学理论体系相媲美。同时，文中对产业利润的分析和对价格问题的诠释是另一个应被广泛称颂的亮点。现代人对《货殖列传》的解读一般以思想阐述为主，很少有人注意它的研究方法。事实上，司马迁在该文中已率先使用了描述性的实证分析方法，这一点和后来的亚当·斯密、马克思所使用的分析方法没有太多的差别。

It contains very rich economic thoughts, such as the welfare of the trading, market liberalism and the role of government in the Shiji:Biographies of Merchants. Sima Qian thought that the transaction has a decisive role in the growth of goods, and production fall in the second. This theory is comparable with the mod-ern economic theory system. At the same time, in this paper, the analysis of industry profits and the price prob-lem is another highlight should be widely praised. Moreover, this paper also bring the service industry into the industry analysis for the first time, and become the first one who proposed the theory of “Low prices for grain hurt the peasants”. The modern interpretations of Biographies of Merchants generally focus on the thoughts;there are few research methods which people pay attention to. In fact, Sima Qian in this paper has pioneered the use of descriptive and empirical analysis method, at this point there is not much difference with the analysis method Adam Smith, Marx used later.
