The paper used the newest standard method, infrared spectrophotometry, to determine oils in the Nanjing part of Yangtze River. Oils were detected in each sampling point. Compared with the old standard method, the way of dehydration during extraction was discussed. the detection limit of new method was 0.004 mg/L, the precision was less than 5%and the sample recovery rate ranged from 79%to 102%. All these met the requirements of quality control.
