生态城镇化是一种可持续的城镇化发展模式，而循环经济是建设生态城镇的方式之一，生态城镇化与循环经济的内在联系决定两者是相生相容的关系。以武汉市X经济开发区为例，地方政府在生态城镇化建设过程中融入循环经济理念，各企业依靠循环经济发展产业，当地居民的生活方式也随循环经济的发展有所改变。将循环经济的理念作为生态城镇化建设、发展的支撑，能有效解决发展中带来的环境问题，建设成经济效益、社会效益和生态效益相统一的新型城镇。
