Objective To evaluate the effect of silver-releasing dressings on non-healing chronic wounds. Methods A systematic search of literatures in PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane, MEDLINE, British Nursing Index, EBSCO, OCLC, Proquest, Nusing Consult, OVID, Elsevier, CALIS, CNKI and CBM from January 2000 to January 2014 was conducted and the quality of the studies was critically appraised and data were extracted by two reviewers independently. Meta-analysis was conducted for the included studies. Results Silver dressings exerted a significant effect on wound size reduction (P=0.0009) and healing rate (P=0.0005) when compared with conventional dressings, though no significant difference on complete wound healing was found ( P=0.38). Conclusion The meta-analysis of the 11 RCTs provides statistical significant evidence to support the use of silver dressings in the treatment of non-healing chronic wounds.
