The first line of defense against the spread of disease is the exclusion of potential damaging pathogens. This can be achieved by controlling the movement of pathogens into disease-free areas from a bio-geographical area(s) in which the pathogen(s) occur. Common pathways by which pathogens move include movement of soil/growth media, germplasm, wood and wood products, air and/or insects. In this paper, the key pathways for movement of forestry pathogens are summarized.
