Objective To explore the effect of music therapy on cognitive function in convales-cent patients with schizophrenia. Methods Eighty convalescent patients with schizophrenia were randomly divided into study group and control group, with 40 patients in each group. All patients were treated with antipsychotic medications. In addition, patients in study group received music therapy.Curative efficacy was evaluated using Wisconsin Card Sorting Test(WCST),Wechsler Memory Scale(WMS)and Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale(WAIS-R).Results Compared with control group, music therapy significantly increased WCST scores of completed categories and correct responses,WMS scores of short-term memory and immediate memory and WAIS-R scores of performance IQ,but obviously decreased WCST scores of perseverative responses after treat-ment for 6 months(P<0.05 or P<0.01).Conclusion Music therapy can improve the cognitive function in convalescent patients with schizophrenia.
