Hull deformation of operating vessels caused by external reasons may lead to loss of load on EB2 and EB3 main engine bearings, such incidents have always attracted the attention of classification societies and ship design and construction departments since 1970s. Class NK uses the reaction influence number in the conventional alignment of shafting, and introduces the equivalent reaction influence number of the engine room rear bulkhead, to approximately calculate the relative displacement at the engine room rear bulkhead after EB2 and EB3 bearings have lost load under the hull deformation condition. This quantified criterion deepens the designer’s understanding of hull deformation in their calculation of shafting alignment.
