把南社人当作固守国学、对西方思想和文化一味抵制的旧文人的传统认识，无疑与南社人的本来面目相距甚远。事实上，南社知识人在清末是以一种复杂的态度对待西方思想与文化的：一方面他们以开放性的态度勇于接受和传播自由民主思想，开风气之先，呼唤中国变革；另一方面他们也没有放弃主体性的认知立场，警惕殖民主义的威胁，努力把革命派对国家与国民的复杂理解，更广泛地传递给更多的普通民众。

In a critical manner, the intellectuals of Nanshe (the Southern Society) developed a new kind of world picture when they responded to the great cultural crisis of the late Qing Dynasty.They actively introduced western thoughts of freedom and democracy to enlighten Chinese people, calling for the national reform.At the same time, they didn't give up their subjectivity by criticizing colonialism and imperialism.Moreover, they spared no efforts to deliver the complicated understanding of the rev-olutionists towards the national reform to the public in their literature works.Indeed, their texts show clearly the historical link-age between China and the world.
