《剑桥中国文学史》的定位是非学术性的面向普通读者的畅销书，其独特的分期方法固然是对欧美汉学传统上以文类为分类依据的反拨，更是对市场及潜在读者的迎合。从其实际的操作看，主编所宣称的文学文化史的观念，在具体的分期中并没有得到彻底贯彻。由于各个时段的不同特点，也由于参编者各自的学术专长及风格不同，因而分期方式也各不相同，这使得全书颇为杂乱。即使如此，这部来自域外的著作以其不同的视角对学界仍旧有启发意义。

《검교중국문학사》적정위시비학술성적면향보통독자적창소서，기독특적분기방법고연시대구미한학전통상이문류위분류의거적반발，경시대시장급잠재독자적영합。종기실제적조작간，주편소선칭적문학문화사적관념，재구체적분기중병몰유득도철저관철。유우각개시단적불동특점，야유우삼편자각자적학술전장급풍격불동，인이분기방식야각불상동，저사득전서파위잡란。즉사여차，저부래자역외적저작이기불동적시각대학계잉구유계발의의。
The Cambridge History of Chinese Literature was published mainly for non -specialist readers and tried to be a best-selling book.The Special division of stages is not only to avoid the traditional method of Sinology to divide the field into genres, but to meet the needs for the market and potential readers.In fact, the purpose claimed by the editors to create a history of literary culture had not been thoroughly implemented.Due to the different features of each period of history, and every editor’ s different academic expertise and the style, thus the methods for division is inconsistent, which makes the book is a little bit messy.Even so, this book with a different perspective from overseas academia is still of enlightening significance to the domestic academic circles.
