Objective To study the distribution and characteristics of main pathogens in specimen of gall-bladder stones. Methods Gallbladders, gallstones and bile collected from cholecystectomy were cultured, in-cluding 60 patients with cholecystolithiasis and 66 controlled patients without cholecystolithiasis. The homology of the main bacteria isolates was analyzed by pulsed field gel electrophoresis to exclude the hospital infection. Results Eighty-eight bacteria strains were cultured from 126 patients and the top three strains were Pseudomo-nas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumonia and Escherichia coli. The positive rates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumonia in gallstone group were significently higher than that in non gallstone group. The bacteria types were also different as shown by pulsed field gel electrophoresis in two groups. Conclusion The gram negative bacteria are the main pathogens in patients with gallbladder stones. Bacterial infections may involve in the formation of gallstones.
