孟京辉的作品，许多改编自国外或者本土的经典，并非简单地将原作中的人物、故事情节、舞台等元素进行重现，而是对原作进行了重新解读，采用三种方法：中国题材西方化、西方题材中国化、舞台呈现综合化，用原作的“旧曲”谱出带有鲜明孟京辉色彩的“新调”。

Meng Jinghui’ s works, most of which are adapted from foreign or local classics, are by no means simple reproduction of such elements as characters, plots, or stages in the original works. They are rather reinterpretations of the originals with the help of three methods, namely the westernization of Chinese themes, Chinization of Western themes and the comprehensiveness of stage presentation. Thus Meng Jinghui succeeds in playing distinctively new tunes from traditional operas.
