GOCE is the first satellite in the world using air drag compensation technology for scientific measurement mission,to be more specific is for Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer mission. The British T5 ion thruster is the key unit in air drag compensation system. Thanks to its excellent performance,it flawlessly carried out the mission. It depicts the technical characteristics,working conditions and performance of T5 ion thruster from very begin-ning of orbit insertation until the end of the mission,and summarizes the application of T5 ion thruster in air darg compen-sation system,eventually proposing suggestions for the developement and applications of air drag compensation system.
