Introduction was made to an insulation accident of 500 kV gas insulated switchgear (GIS) equipment. This paper analyzed its emergency disposal and strategy management and determined accident causes via discharge track and material analysis. The accident was due to metal foreign objects mixed into the clearance between casingfiange and insulation basin epoxy during equipment installation process. The vibration of the equipment caused foreign object position displacement with electricfield change and thusfiashover accident took place. It is pointed out that construction on site should be with strict quality management and control, to ensure equipment installation quality and to guarantee power grid in safe and stable operation.
