Objective To assess the effects of reminiscence therapy in older people with mild to moderate Alzheimer's dementia. Methods A randomized controlled trial with two parallel arms-an intervention group (n=21) and a usual-care control group (n=21) was carried out. The intervention consists of joint reminiscence groups therapy weekly for twelve consecutive weeks. The primary outcome measures were the cognitive and self-esteem level of people with AD, as assessed by the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Self-Esteem Scale (SES). Results After 3month's remi-niscence therapy, the MMSE improvement of the intervention group was almost as the same as the control group (t=0.104, P= 0.917), but the SES in the intervention group was significantly higher than that in the control group (t= 2.238, P=0.031). Conclusion The reminiscence therapy can remarkable improve the self-esteem level of older people with mild to moderate Alzheimer's dementia. This approach is worth to be promoted in clinical practice.
