《西游补》的版本与序跋问题存在着诸多争议，如版本与序跋写作的时间、序跋的作者、《西游记》续书之序跋搞混等。通过对有关文献资料的甄别和新材料的进一步挖掘，考定出崇祯间刊本《西游补》附有明代嶷如居士的《西游补序》和静啸斋主人的《西游补答问》。嶷如居士就是小说的作者，与静啸斋主人为同一人，即董说。该版本并无“天目山樵序”和《读西游补杂记》。空青室刊本《西游补》同时附“天目山樵序”和《读西游补杂记》。“天目山樵序”作者为张文虎，序文写于咸丰三年（1853），“三一道人”乃是张文虎友人。《读西游补杂记》作者为钱培名，写于咸丰三、四年间。
《서유보》적판본여서발문제존재착제다쟁의，여판본여서발사작적시간、서발적작자、《서유기》속서지서발고혼등。통과대유관문헌자료적견별화신재료적진일보알굴，고정출숭정간간본《서유보》부유명대억여거사적《서유보서》화정소재주인적《서유보답문》。억여거사취시소설적작자，여정소재주인위동일인，즉동설。해판본병무“천목산초서”화《독서유보잡기》。공청실간본《서유보》동시부“천목산초서”화《독서유보잡기》。“천목산초서”작자위장문호，서문사우함봉삼년（1853），“삼일도인”내시장문호우인。《독서유보잡기》작자위전배명，사우함봉삼、사년간。
There has been much controversy on the editions and the prefaces and postscripts of The Hsi-yu pu (A Sequel to The Hsi-yu-chi), regarding, say, the years of publication and writing of the prefaces and postscripts, the author(s) of the prefaces and postscripts, and the confusion of The Hsi-yu pu with other se-quels to The Hsi-yu-chi in prefaces and postscripts .This paper, based on a survey of existing documents and a discovery of new evidence , identifies “A Preface to The Hsi-yu pu” by the Yiru Jushi and “Q&A on The Hsi-yu pu” by the Jingxiaozhai Zhuren in the edition published during Emperor Chongzhen ’ s reign ( 1627-1644 ) in the Ming Dynasty ( 1368-1644 ) .The Yiru Jushi is the author of the novel , who is the same person as the Jingxiaozhai Zhuren , i.e., Dong Shuo (1620-1686 ) .That edition does not contain “A Preface by Tianmus-han Qiao” and “Notes on The Hsi-yu pu”, which are in the edition published by the Kongqingshi Press .The“Preface” was written by Zhang Wenhu (1808-1885) in 1853, and the“Taoist Sanyi” mentioned therein is a friend of Zhang;the “Notes” was written by Qian Peiming in about 1853-1854 .
