The classification and the principle of the friction stir spot welding are reviewed in the present paper. The research status and application for transportation and aerospace of friction stir spot welding around the world are introduced. The significance of friction stir spot welding as a promising technology for expanding the application of aluminum alloy structure, promoting the development of weight lightening of car body and increasing the lifting capacity of aerospace vehicle is pointed out.
