由于父母外出务工,贵州省松桃苗族农村地区的儿童由祖辈、亲朋或父母中的一方监护,这使得他们从小就缺乏正常的家庭教育,同时把教育的重任更多地推给了学校。而这里的学校教育因沿袭着全国升学教育的办学模式,教育内容、方法等与苗族儿童的生活相脱节,无助于他们获得在本土社会生存中所需的知识,不能有助于他们更好地融入当地社会。儿童的成长离不开其生长的环境及孕育其中的文化,充分发挥民族文化对儿童的教育影响,以弥补家庭教育和学校教育的不足。
