在中国民国时期的高等教育发展中，私立大学谱写了新的篇章。私立大学的兴起，使得民国时期招生制度不断地改革，这也对选拔人才提供了重要契机。同期公立大学相比，私立大学自主招生具有选拔方式灵活、题型多变、大量采用推荐制等特点。正是各个私立大学招生政策的不同，对生源质量也造成了不同的影响，采取广泛收取学生，考试门槛较低的方法，生源质量偏差；采取限制名额，提高考试难度，提高师资力量，生源质量呈中高水平。
