由于在历史上经历的文化剥夺和白人文化同化的危险，加上白人的选择性遗忘与黑人的选择性失忆，黑人的文化记忆遭遇着历史性与现实性的危机。针对这种境况，莫里森在小说中矢志不移地建构黑人文化记忆，她的努力体现在其文本的三种功能当中，即文本的记忆媒介功能、见证功能和唤起艺术感染力的功能，这对黑人族裔身份认同及黑人文化与黑人历史的传承起到巨大的促进作用。

Due to the cultural deprivation in history and the risk of white culture assimilation,together with the white′s selective forgetting and the black′s selective amnesia,the cultural memory of the black is faced with both historic and realistic crisis.Faced with this situation,Morrison has been committing to constructing the cultural memory of the black.By serving as memory media and witness of ethnic history,and arousing artistic appeal,her literary creation contributes greatly to the black′s identity as well as the inheritance of the black′s culture and histo-ry.
