长期以来众多学者对18世纪法国唯物主义及16～18世纪欧洲唯物主义的理解，一般都停留在将其定性为机械性、形而上学性和唯心史观的“旧唯物主义”。他们不仅忽视了法国唯物主义的价值和意义，还由于这种忽视，在肯定两者区别的同时却遮蔽了它们的内在关联，而且对这种区别的理解也还只是停留在表面上，未能准确系统地把握到两者之间的批判承启关系。故而这里力求系统全面地梳理和厘清18世纪法国唯物主义与16～18世纪欧洲各国唯物主义的区别和继承关系，这才能深入、真实地理解和把握16～18世纪唯物主义哲学与18世纪唯物主义的发展脉络及系统准确地把握整个西方哲学史的内容。

Many scholars' comprehension toward European materialism of 16~18th century and French material-ism of 18th century, generally stayed in the field of "old materialism" which is characterized as me-chanical, metaphysics and Historical idealism. They neglected not only the value and meaning of French materialism, covered up their inherent relevance while affirming the difference between the two due to this ignorance, but also stayed still on the surface toward this discriminative comprehension, failed to grasp their critical inherit relations accurately and systematically. This text focused on the analysis of the distinctions and the inherit relations toward materialism between France in 18th century and other European countries in 16~18th century systematically and comprehensively, and grasped the history of western philosophy systematically and actually.
