Male Female%Patriarchal Society%Private Property
@@@@As one of the most famous works of Shakespeare, Hamlet never loses in the attracting of study. Reading the work from the feminist perspective, this thesis found that the two female characters in the play, Ophelia and Gertrude both can not speak but only be said. In this way, they had no voice in important events and were absented from many important occasions or when they played in it, they were just the pawns and victims in the contrivance of men. The thesis believed that the reason for their tragic ends was that in the patriarchal society, women were just the“private Property”of men in the words of Simon de Beauvior. This provides a suitable answer for the sudden chance in Hamlet’s attitudes towards Ophelia and Gertrude. What is more important of the play is that it present us what kind of dilemma females were in when their male rulers were in conflict, as Gertrude have to choose between husband and so; Ophelia, father and lover. When they could choose between the two, they can only choose death.
