To explore the road of socialism with Chinese characteristics, the Communist Party of China has undergone a process from "crossing the river by feeling the stones" to the road consciousness, and then to the road self-confidence. At the beginning of reform and opening up, the Party tried the road of socialism with Chinese characteristics holding the determination and courage of "crossing the river by feeling the stones". The 16th national party congress declared the Chinese characteristic socialism market economic system having initially built, which indicates the Party’s self-consciousness to the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics. The 18th national party congress proposed "road self-confidence", which reflects the party has realized the historical leap from the realm of necessity to the realm of freedom on the road of socialism with Chinese characteristics.
