唐武德四年始铸新币,“开元通宝”为官方正统读法,“开通元宝”虽为民间误读之流俗,然影响久远,故高宗铸旋读之“乾封泉宝”,叛军铸币、地方铸币均袭此.后肃宗虽铸“乾元重宝”以拨乱反正,然两说并存,乃至并立,遂形成后世铸币直读之通宝和旋读之元宝两大基本系统.
