@@@@Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) have been identified as a central part of antimicrobial innate immunity. NETs are composed of neutrophil-derived DNA, histones, and neutrophil cytoplasm-derived proteins. NETs function not only as an effective antimicrobial first line defense machanism but also may lead to tissue damage in the absence of counter regulation mechanisms. There is growing evidence that NETs kinetics follow the inflammatory course rather than the tissue damage. A rapid quantification method for neutrophil-derived circulating free DNA (cf-DNA/NETs) in plasma has recently been developed. cf-DNA/NETs might be an important novel marker in the diagnosis and prediction of inflammatory disorders.
