@@@@Lutein is a xanthophyll member of the carotenoid family, existing in the macular area and the whole retina. Lutein helps protect the eyes through filtering blue light and has antioxidant activity. This paper reviews the current research progress on the visual protective effect and the newest extraction methods of lutein. The relationships between lutein and macular degeneration as well as senile cataract are introduced, and the effects of lutein on the vision development and function are highlighted. The extraction methods of lutein are summarized, and the optimized conditions and the technological characteristics of the extraction are illustrated. Finally, the research prospects about visual protective effect and extraction methods of lutein are proposed.
