This article summarizes the origination and development of the concept of Ecological Infrastructure (EI), focusing on the related studies and practices of Ecological Infrastructure (EI) done in the Graduate School of Landscape Architecture (GSLA), Peking University. EI is defined, by the research team, as a natural eco-system that cities rely on, and a basis for securing the sustainable nature service for cities and citizens. This article suggests that the negative approach is an optimistic approach in constructing urban Ecological-infrastructure and the Security Pattern is the specific methodology of EI. The article introduces several relevant case studies, including cases at scales of nation, city and site level. The application of integrating EI with Ecological Planning, Land-use Planning, Urban Green System Planning, Culture Heritage studies are also presented.
