Objective: To investigate the frequency of CD4+CD25high regulatory T cells in the peripheral blood of lupus nephritis patients with diverse pathology. Methods: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 35 lupus ne?phritis patients based on the 2003 ISN/RPS classification system and 11 healthy controls were counted and stained for CD4 and CD25. The relation between CD4+CD25high regulatory T cells and renal pathology anddisease activity was analyzed. Results: No significant difference in the frequency of CD4+CD25high regulatory T cells was noted between the lupus nephritis patients and normal controls (P>0.05). Although the frequency of this cell pop?ulations was not correlated to the disease activity (P>0.05), it was significantly decreased in lupus nephritis pa?tients with Class III and IV when compared with patients with Class II and V (P<0.05). Conclusion: CD4+CD25high regulatory T cells in the peripheral blood could be a promissory biomarker for active lupus nephritis pa?tients and this may give rationale to use regulatory T cells as target cells in the treatment of lupus nephritis.
