湖南郴州的“郴”字,系工具书、地方志未能解决字原的难题;通过搜罗、集纳历代名著、史料、字书、地图集,运用最新考古成果,结合田野考察,修正原有“秦置县”、只表地名等定论,提出其产生于华夏农耕、医药创始阶段的“林”“”“”为主源的依据.

In reference books and local chronicles ,it is difficult for us to find the origin of the word “郴” , which represents the name of a place Chenzhou Hunan .The authors of this paper have searched masterpieces ,hi-torical data ,dictionaries and atlases of various dynasties ,used the new achievements of archaeology and field in-vestigations and concluded that it comes from the words “林”“ ”“ ” during the early aerial farming and medi-cine making period .The research has also proved that the county jurisdiction began in Chenzhou during the War-ring States Period ,much earlier than Qin Dynasty .
