The systems of microemulsions are currently of interest to the pharmaceutical scientist because of their considerable potential to act as drug delivery vehicles by incorporating a wide range of drugs. The microemulsion-based drug delivery systems are often used to control or delay the release of the entrapped drugs. This paper gives an overview of the formation, phase behaviour and characterization of microemulsions. The factors that influence the release of the incorporated drugs and the importance of the nonionic surfactants, such as Span and Tween are also discussed.
