High quality polyindoles films, such as polyindole, poly (5-methylindole), poly (5-nitroindole), poly (5-cyanoindole), poly (5-bromoindole), were synthesized electrochemically by direct anodic oxidation of indole and its derivatives in boron trifluoride diethyl etherate (BFEE) or its mixed electrolytes. They were soluble in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and tetrahydrofuran (THF). The fluorescent emission properties of indole and its derivatives were strongly dependent on the nature of the substituent, but this dependent is almost not observed in the synthesized polymers. The excitation and emission spectra of the polymer species showed a significant red shift compared to the monomers, in consistent with their greater extent of electron delocalisation. The broader excitation and emission spectra of polyindoles can be ascribed to the wide molar distribution of as-prepared polymers.
